World’s Oldest Rodeo®

Celebrating a Legacy Since 1888

The Birthplace of Professional Rodeo

On July 4, 1888, a group of Prescott merchants and businessmen organized what they called a “cowboy tournament,” offering prize money to local competitors and unknowingly creating what would become the world’s first professional rodeo. Juan Leivas claimed victory as the first champion, and a new American tradition was born. More than a century later, the World’s Oldest Rodeo® remains one of Prescott’s most celebrated events, preserving the spirit, skill, and traditions of the American West while welcoming visitors from around the globe.

A Fourth of July Tradition

Held each year around Independence Day, the World’s Oldest Rodeo® is far more than a rodeo—it’s a community-wide celebration of Prescott’s western roots. Visitors can experience thrilling rodeo competitions, lively parades, family-friendly activities, live entertainment, and the excitement that fills the city during Prescott Frontier Days®.
